THE MEETING PIAZZOLLA-BOULANGER

The crisis in Argentina had also started an innovative climate, which was poked under the groans of the Fifties, in prelude to the spectacular and discussed appearance of the tango of avant-garde. The anguish predicted the resurrection.
In 1946, Piazzolla created its own orchestra, which it gave up little by little to devote to the composition. In the tango of Buenos Aires, two definite tendencies had appeared: traditional and evolutionary.
Piazzolla was in favour of the evolutionism. He propelled a current of avant-garde, which he will support until the Nineties. He was going to deeply influence all the musicians who continued to develop the tango.
In 1950, he inaugurated, with Para lucirse, his polemic style of composition, while he collected prices for its works of classical music. It was then in a dead end, ready to give up the tango to dedicate itself to a more "civilized" music. A meeting changed its life, and this go with the history took place in Paris. In 1953, Piazzolla obtained the Fabien-Sevitzky price for its Sinfonía de Buenos Aires, equipped with a purse of the French government to study with Nadia Boulanger in collective courses with the academy of Fontainebleau.
Piazzolla and his wife settled modestly in a studio of the street of Douai lent by the pianist Héctor Grané, where they began the "beautiful and unforgettable bohemian life." But Piazzolla wanted courses particular, although not having the means of offering a daily meal.
"Something reduced my situation. I discovered that orchestras of tango took my Prepárense, written in 1952, again in France. Royalties fell me from the sky", told Piazzolla later.
He arrived at Nadia Boulanger place with a bag full with partitions, all its traditional work. The Master devoted the first two weeks to analyse them.
"One day, Nadia Boulanger tells me finally that all which I had shown him was well written, but that she did not find the spirit of it. She asked me which kind of music I played in my country, which were my concerns, which I aimed… I had told her anything of my past tanguero, and even less than my instrument was the bandoneón, arranged in the cupboard of my room in Paris. I thought that if I told her the truth she was going to throw me by the window. Nadia had been schoolfellow of Ravel, and Master of Igor Markevitch, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Jean Françaix; she was already regarded as the best pedagogue of the world of the music, and me, I was simply a tanguero.
Two days afterwards, Piazzolla acknowledged that he earned its living by writing arrangements for orchestras of tango, that it had played with Aníbal Troilo and its own orchestra and that, wearied of all that, he had believed that its future was in the classical music. "Nadia looked me in the eyes and asked me to play to him one of my tangos to the piano. There, I spoke to her about the bandoneón, which she does not expect to hear a good pianist, because, really, I was not it. She insisted: "That does not do anything, Astor, play your tango". Then, I started with Triunfal. I believe that I did not arrive at half. Nadia stopped me, took the hands to me and, with its soft English accent, tells me: "Astor, that are beautiful, I like much, here is Piazzolla truth, never give up it". And it was the great revelation of my life".
Piazzolla had definitively chosen the tango. He studied long months with Nadia Boulanger, mainly the counterpoint with four parts, "that returned to me insane, I learned a lot from a Master who knew all. The counterpoint, it is something, which I used much in my music. It is to succeed which four or five musicians play a different line and which the final result sounds with wonder. I could have continued during two hundred years with Nadia Boulanger, but without the talent, this science of the counterpoint is not used for nothing. One can study much music, but the intuition is fundamental. The technique helps, it enriches, but it is necessary that the raw material comes to him to assistance "
January 5, 1955, Piazzolla wrote to José Gobello, announcing a great news to him: "My activity in Paris is only studied, I consider it regrettable that my stay in this city either so short, he would take me at least two years to manage to know all which I need. I must go back to Buenos Aires and work to be able to turn over one day in this so beautiful and so essential city. I will record in Paris with a unit directed by myself, and I will hold also the bandoneón soloist. The titles of my four tangos are Prepárense, Marrón y Azul, Imperial and S.V.P., and this last composed in collaboration with a French musician, Marcel Feijoo. This recording is made on January 17, and the unit is of 8 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos, harp, piano, and low and myself as a soloist. I repeat you that the tango likes enormously and, by chance, one likes the good, since the musicians and the public lean for the orchestras of Troilo, Francini-Pontier, Salgán, Basso, Fresedo, Pugliese, they are unaware of the remainder".
Thus were born these splendid tangos in homage to Paris which were Chau París, Gypsy tango, S.V.P., Marrón y azul (inspired by a picture of Braque), Río Sena, Sens unique, Bando (name familiar of the bandoneón in France), Imperial, and the spectacular tango called Picasso.
All enchantment that Paris can wake up in an inventor of emotions reflects in these tangos of Piazzolla. Exchanging the stanzas of the poem for the notes of the musical staff, the composer evokes, like perhaps never before him, feelings which this city unties and releases. The good-bye of the tango Chau París be like the wrenching of a man who leaves with regret an atmosphere which had involved it to the subsoil its being. Forced to leave, the musician gives up scraps of his body and his heart. Bando is made of pure nostalgia, in the rail of the bandoneón. With S.V.P., the bandoneón is rolled up on the pavements and the paving stones, stops then begins again its strolls without end.
The Parisian river sings in Río Sena: changing currents and variable colours, through notes and counterpoints of Piazzolla.
With Sens unique, the Argentinean musician gives a surrealist key to the ancestral movement of Paris, which sometimes stops to wonder about its destiny before taking again the voyage. Picasso expresses the magic of the forms and the nuances, the chaos, which is ordered to summarize all the trajectories of creation.
These Parisian compositions of Piazzolla, which coincided with a major rupture of the Argentinean history, the fall of the peronism (although the author of Adiós Nonino was completely indifferent to the policy), marked a revolution in the tango. A bridge tended between the Guardia Nueva and the avant-garde. Under the influence of Paris, its odours, its stations, its noises, its recesses, its legends, Piazzolla reached a high stopover of its inspiration. In the music of Buenos Aires, there is "before" and "after" Piazzolla, as there was before and after Julio de Caro in the Twenties.
Piazzolla revives Nadia Boulanger with the academy of Fontainebleau, twenty years after their first meeting. The Master was almost blind, but its musical ear remained perfect. Piazzolla approached it, took the hand to him and tells him: "Hello, Miss Boulanger". She recognized it with the voice and answered him: "Hello, my dear Astor, I congratulate you, now you are very famous".
Paris and its pedagogue had modelled a new tanguero and, this time, one of largest, by opening the way of the universality to him.
